New Advanced CT Scanner Helps Diagnose Disease Faster
February 2008

Pioneer Valley Hospital has added a state-of-the-art 64-slice Computed Tomography (CT) scanner to the hospital. The 64-slice CT features advanced technology that can produce split-second high-quality images of inside the human body.

With the new CT scanner, doctors can view more accurate anatomical detail in a fraction of the time needed for other tests, enabling them to  more effectively detect and treat a wide range of life-threatening illnesses, including heart disease, caner, stroke and lung disease.

Because of the clear and precise detail, the possibility of discovering disease in its earliest stages is improved with this technology. The speed at which it can produce images is especially useful in emergency situations when physicians may have to make life and death decisions.

For patients, this CT scanner provides a more pleasant experience. With much faster scan times, most scans can be completed while the patient holds his or her breath. Another advantage is the ability to provide diagnostic testing for large patients. The 64-slice CT scanner has a table weight capacity of up to 400 lbs.

The CT scan is a non-invasive procedure. During the scan, the patient is placed on a table and moved through the donut-shaped scanner while an X-ray beam is projected through cross sections of the body. The X-ray energy passes through the patient and is recorded on electronic detectors in the scanner. This information is then sent to a specialized computer that reconstructs the information into 64 thin, individual slices to reveal more detail, resulting in more definitive test results. The individual slices can be re-assembled on the computer to create a three dimensional image of an internal organ.

"We're very pleased to bring this innovative technology and higher standard of medical care to our patients at Pioneer Valley Hospital," said Bryanie Swilley, Chief Executive Officer.
